Everything You Need to Know
What is QSFP 40G?
QSFP 40G is one of the most popular interfaces for high-speed data transmission. It stands for Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable 40 Gigabit Ethernet. It is a pluggable optical transceiver with a duplex LC connector interface used for connectivity using MultiMode Fiber (MMF).
What are the different types of QSFP+ Transceivers?
Some of the common types of QSFP+ transceivers are:
40GBase-SR4
40GBase-SR4 is probably the most widely-used and most popular 40G transceiver for short distance transmission, mostly link lengths of 100m and 150m on OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers. It is an MPO-interfaced parallel fiber optic transceiver with a 4x10G transmission pattern. Normally it is used in data centers to interconnect two switches with 12 lane ribbon cables.
40GBase-LR4
It is for long range transmission of data. The LR4 multiplexes all four sending lanes onto one fiber strand and all four receiving lanes onto another single fiber strand. This transceiver type supports link lengths of up to 10kms via a single-mode fiber cable with duplex LC connectors.
40GBase-ER4
The 40GBase-ER4 module can handle long distance transmission of data up to 40kms over SMF fiber with duplex LC connectors. It works by converting four 10G input channels to four CWDM optical signals, then multiplexes them into a single 40G channel. On the receiving end of the module, the single 40G input is demultiplexed into four CWDM signals, then transforms them to a four channel electrical data output.

Which QSFP+ Type Is Right For You?
Understanding the different 40G QSFP+ interfaces, types and applications is critical when choosing the best equipment for your data facility.
What are the Types of 40G QSFP+ Optical Modules, DAC, AOC?
The 40G network connection technology solution includes 40G QSFP+ series optical transceiver modules. Among them, the most common ones are 40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+, 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+, and 40G LR4 PSM. In addition, the high-speed cable DAC-40G QSFP+ and active optical cable AOC-40G QSFP+ have attracted the attention of more and more users in the industry.
One type of 40G QSFP+ optical module is the Direct Attach Cable (DAC). DACs are types of high-speed cables that connect switches, servers, and storage devices in data centers. They use copper cables to transmit data over short distances, typically up to 7 meters. DACs are popular because of their low cost, low power consumption, and low latency. They are commonly used for connecting switches and servers in the same rack or adjacent racks.
Another type of 40G QSFP+ optical module is the Active Optical Cable (AOC). AOCs are similar to DACs, but they use fiber optic cables instead of copper. They can transmit data over longer distances, up to 100 meters, making them ideal for connecting switches and servers across data center rows. AOCs are more expensive than DACs, but they offer higher bandwidth, lower latency, and better signal integrity.
In addition to DACs and AOCs, there are also different types of 40G QSFP+ optical modules based on the type of fiber optic cable used. These include single-mode and multimode fiber optics. Single-mode fiber optics are used for long-distance transmission, while multimode fiber optics are used for short-distance transmission.
